George Michael co-wrote 'Careless Whisper' with his Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley.

George and Andrew took inspiration from stories from George'due south early on romantic moments. George explained that much of the song's content is based on events from his babyhood.
The song was mainly inspired by 2 different girls named Jane and Helen:
"When I was twelve, thirteen, I used to have to chaperone my sister, who was two years older, to an ice rink at Queensway in London. There was a girl there with long blond hair whose name was Jane.
"I was a fat male child in glasses and I had a big crush on her -though I didn't stand a chance. My sister used to go and exercise what she wanted when nosotros got to the skating rink and I would spend the afternoon swooning over this girl Jane.
"A few years later, when I was sixteen, I had my offset relationship with a girl chosen Helen. It had merely started to absurd off a bit when I discovered that the blonde girl from Queensway had moved in just around the corner from my school.

Explaining that after he stopped wearing spectacles, he began getting invited to parties, he continued: "And the girl who didn't even see me when I was twelve invited me in. So I went out with her for a couple of months simply I didn't cease seeing Helen. I thought I was existence smart – I had gone from being a total loser to existence a two-timer.
"And I remember my sisters used to give me a hard time because they found out and they actually liked the first girl. The whole idea of 'Careless Whisper' was the first daughter finding out about the second – which she never did.

George wasn't happy with the original version
The song went through at least two attempts at product.
The first was during a trip George made to the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama, where he worked with producer Jerry Wexler.
Even so, George was unhappy with the version that was originally produced by Wexler, and he decided to re-tape and produce the song himself, which ended upward being the version that was released.

Jazz musician Dan Forshaw later revealed that saxophonist Steve Gregory had got a call to re-record the song'south sax solo, and he was the 11th saxophone player to record the solo every bit George wanted to go the sound he hoped for.
"Session musicians do not have much idea what they are going to be recording until they make it, and this was the case for Steve and some other saxophonist who was ahead of him in the (queue)," Forshaw said.
